Category captain
A category captain is the supplier a retailer relies on for advice about a whole category, including its range, shelf layout and promotional calendar.
What it means for retail and category teams
Captains are usually the largest supplier in the category, with the data, shopper research and people to produce a full category plan. The retailer gets expertise it may not have in-house; the supplier gets influence over how the shelf is run. Some retailers also appoint a validator, a second supplier who reviews the captain's recommendations.
Why it matters
The advice can be good and still be self-interested. A captain rarely proposes cutting its own lines, and the plan it brings may be close to the one it takes to every competitor. Treating the captain's plan as one input, checked against the retailer's own data and strategy, keeps the expertise without handing over the category.
Illustrative example
The business and figures are illustrative, not customer data
A snack supplier acting as captain recommends adding six flavour extensions, four of them its own, and moving a smaller brand to the bottom shelf. The category manager checks the proposal against the category's own sales and finds the smaller brand's shoppers rarely buy the captain's lines instead. The team takes two of the extensions, keeps the smaller brand at eye level, and records why.
